Starting Situation
The research center Karlsruhe has an infrastructure which has evolved over 40 years and which will continue
to develop dynamically. Against the background of the liberalized supply economy and within a planning
period of five years time, the project goal was the optimization and, where necessary, new organization of the central energy and media supplying of electricity, heat, refrigeration and compressed air.

Result
The concept was structured in four development phases; the first step included measures for the optimization
of operations and contract conditions for media supplying. In the other development phases, investment
measures for the area of production were investigated and analyzed. In the process, cost saving measures
with an amortization time of less than three years could be developed - measures which would lead to a
further 10% cost savings! Taking all interactions of the recommended measures into consideration, the sum
of the realizable CO2 reduction was estimated to be about 28%.
